Honeywood Schoolhouse is a small independent school for
children ages 4 to 11. We serve a single mixed age group ( a maximum of 10 to 12
children) in a home-like setting, with access to a variety of indoor and outdoor learning spaces, and opportunities for interaction with the larger local
community.
Our Space:
We are located in a spacious one-level house within a residential neighborhood. The schoolhouse is entirely dedicated to and used by the children on a daily basis. The learning environment includes the main schoolroom (with shelves of resources, ample table space and carpeted floor space for sprawling out while working on projects), a cozy library, a comfy "family room" that includes sewing/crafts area, nature corner and music corner, a playroom (with puppet theater, room to build with Legos and blocks, and more), and a space for messy arts and crafts/science/woodwork. We also have a backyard with a projected garden and fort, lawn space for outdoor play, and access to a neighborhood green space with trails, woods and creek which we visit daily.
Our Curriculum:
We have developed our own comprehensive integrated curriculum, and implement it flexibly, adapting it to individual learning needs, styles and preferences. Each session we have a planning meeting for each family where we work with the parents to select a certain curricular path for each student. We focus on social/emotional skills for the preschool set, add academic skills for school-age children, and fun for everyone!
Our Philosophy:
At Honeywood Schoolhouse we believe that children have an
innate capacity for wonder and an intrinsic curiosity about the world
around them. Our aim is to preserve and cultivate that thirst for
learning. We do so by providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where
children's physical, emotional, social and intellectual needs are met,
and a community in which trusting relationships with other learners can
be developed. Our teachers act not just as instructors but as
facilitators, role models, listeners, organizers, and generally as more
experienced co-learners: learners with more general knowledge and
skills, and more experience in the process of learning, using
resources, and developing working relationships. We are a secular school with a vision of helping form complete human beings. |
